My family owns a Garmin Nuvi 200W and we recently got a Nuvi 260 in order to have the text-to-speech feature. I assumed the two models would have the same maps and logic. However, the 200W has been almost flawless in giving directions around my neighborhood and the 260 makes a lot of errors on the same routes, including telling to turn off the freeway on a non-existent ramp. Probably well known to others, but this is new to me. Press fr several seconds on the bar graph in the upper left corner of the menu screen, release, and bingo, a satellite display. You can also get a system debug display by holding down on the speedo in the nav window. Nuvi must have slightly different firmware, as my 260 has the debug from pressing/holding the battery icon, but nothing happens for the satellites bars & display It’s twitchy to access on my 200w. press the bar icon... more
When I plug my Garmin into the car charger (cigarette lighter) the PC charging symbol pops up and the Garmin is totally unusable until I disconnect the cable at the back. Since the battery seems to not last very long I find this feature most annoying. Surely a design flaw or are most GPSs like this? I’ve also noticed the search facility is not as good as I expected. I got a beautifully refurbished Garmin 200W, and when I registered with Garmin I got a free map update/download. When I try to install the maps it says that “a previous version was not installed”. So, how can I download the most current maps? Use Webupdater to make sure that you have the latest firmware, and then try your upgrade again.
