I wonder..how come one CD-ROM such as Delorme or Microsoft Streets has street level detail of every town in the USA yet on auto systems, (even on Alpine’s DVD which I now have) only one or two major metro areas per state has street level detail, the rest of the State having only State map level detail? Perhaps on auto systems there has to be so much detail on each street segment, that they are progressively mapping the entire USA. Maybe by the year 2002 every street in the USA will be on such... more
I was surfing the Magellan site and noticed that they have a software upgrade (firmware upgrade) that enables WAAS on units that were not previously WAAS capable. They claim that older units with enough memory can handle the algorithm, those without enough firmware memory can’t. Is WAAS upgrade just an algorithm that can be implemented on a PC with a standard GPS receiver? Can one consider an equivalent upgrade for Garmin units? Garmin already upgraded those units that they said had enough... more
I am rather new to GPS application development. I am however rather skilled in general application development and proramming. Pehaps I am asking to much for the available toolkits on the market. My question is rather simple. I manage a list of street addresses. I want people to be able to use their GPS systems to get to these addresses. I further think the specific devices for my users will be likely the units built into various cars over handheld devices – but do not necessarily want to exclude... more
Air Force Says GPS System Rollover Successful WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Air Force officials said Saturday’s rollover of the Global Positioning System (GPS) time clock was a success. “As expected, the Global Positioning System satellite (system) and associated ground facilities have successfully gone through the end of week rollover and military and civilian GPS users worldwide can continue to depend on accurate information from the GPS satellites,” said the Air Force Space... more
I’m planning to buy a telescope next year September or October, but as I’m quite new to the ‘real’ job of looking at the sky, I don’t have a broad knowledge of which brands are better for which equipment. I’m going to buy a Celestron NexStar 11″ GPS Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope, but it’s more about the accessories that I don’t know yet if I’m making the good choice. Here’s a list of what I’m planning to buy. If you’re thinking... more
I am thinking of picking up a GPS handheld to address the issue of finding my car in a mall parking lot. This is probably one of the dumbest ideas for such a device. I am curious if things could get any dumber than this. In my case, I have gone to new mall locations and forgot where I parked. Anyhow, in light of this, does anyone have any tips for buying a handheld GPS for this purpose? I go to speedway most weekends and often end up in the official parking lot, which is basically a large field.... more
